Educated in John Hopkins University (Baltimore, USA), the Max Planck Institute (Göttingen, RFA) and CALTECH (Pasadena, USA). He has worked in the NIH (Bethesda, USA) and in the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Centre (CSIC-UAM, Madrid).
He currently divides his work between the CBMSO and Duke University, where he has received a grant from the Salvador de Madariaga programme and is also supported by the iLINK programme of the CSIC. He has studied the cellular cytoskeleton and the molecular mechanisms of protein transport. He is currently working on the molecular aspects of the regulation and function of GLUT4, ANKB and ATP7B in the context of type 2 diabetes and Wilson's disease. He is also studying the functional significance of the oscillation of a new single copy toroid structure in cells (MCYD, Explora). His closest collaborators are Dr. Vasiliki Lalioti and Dr. Diego Pulido.
