Joan Cerdà Luque

Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Barcelona after completing his doctoral thesis at the Torre de la Sal Institute of Aquaculture of the National Science Research Council (CSIC) in 1993.

After about 5 years of postdoctoral research at the Whitney Marine Laboratory (University of Florida, USA) and the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ, Heidelberg, Germany), he joined the Institute for Agri-Food Research and Technology (IRTA) in 1999 as a staff researcher at the Aquaculture Centre in San Carlos de la Ràpita (Tarragona).

In 2000, Dr. Cerdà formed a research group on the reproduction and molecular genetics of fish, which since June 2004 has been at the IRTA Laboratory of the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM, CSIC) in Barcelona and is part of the reference network on research and development in aquaculture (XRAq) of the Catalonian Regional Government.

Dr. Cerdà is investigating the biology of fish reproduction in order to decipher the molecular, cellular and endocrine mechanisms involved and contribute to the development of new biotechnological applications for aquaculture. Dr. Cerdà has supervised 12 national and international research projects, including the Spain-Canada project PLEUROGENE (2004-07) on flatfish genomics funded by the Spanish Genome Foundation. He is the author of 60 articles in scientific journals included on the SCI and several book chapters, and has published two books, one of which is on the molecular and physiological basis of the formation of fish eggs.
