With a full-scale war raging in Europe for more than two years, Europe has entered a new era. The period after 1945 conventionally known as post-War was followed by the post-Wall period, which lasted from the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 to Vladimir Putin’s full scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. A continent which has made such enormous advances in the spread of freedom, democracy and the institutions of the Euro-Atlantic West – both EU and NATO – over the half century since the end of the dictatorships in Spain, Portugal and Greece is now faced with an aggressive Russia, nationalist populism spreading into the heart of Western Europe, a US threatening to reduce its commitment to Europe and non-Western powers, such as China and India, which seriously constrain the West’s power to set the international agenda.
Drawing on his new book, Europa: Una Historia Personal, Timothy Garton Ash will explore the achievements and failures of Europe in its recent history. He will ask what this new period will bring, and what we should do as Europeans to shape it.
