  • Programme

The current economic crisis has its origins in both the business cycle and international financial and commercial shocks. Thus the contemporary crisis is a long-run phenomenon, the comprehension and analysis of which must be undertaken in comparative terms and placed in historical perspective. This conference will analyze the Latin American crises of the 1930s, the 1980s, the crisis of 1997-2003 and the crisis that began during the second half of 2014, as well as the relative performance of other regions of the world, with particular attention paid to Europe and the United States. The comparative framework takes as its departure point a revision of key international and financial conditions and proceeds with an analysis that focuses on political economy responses to the crises and their impact on productive economic activity. As an analytical framework, the wider context of the international economy is taken into account as well as the degree to which it constrains or allows the adoption of anti-cyclical policies.
