The Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU) celebrates on the 25th November 2016, in the headquarters of the Ramon Areces Foundation in Madrid, a conference day for science careers advice for postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and other science graduates in their last year of master or degree. With this conference, which is celebrated for the third year in a row, it is intended to both offer information and guidance about the variety of science careers, and inspire new vocations, through the wide experience of different professionals in sciences invited by SRUK that will cover the following topics:
Did you know that a country with a science and technology system as developed and diverse as the United Kingdom is only able to consolidate with tenured positions in academia to the 3.5 % of PhDs in sciences? Taking this into consideration, it is needed to show all different science careers beyond university and research centres at a young age.
The traditional researcher career is often shown as a professional career with stages that are very well-defined in length and in merits to advance from one stage to another, so that a graduate does a Postgraduate Course, a Master, a PhD, one or two Postdocs, and sooner or later, gets his academic Tenured Position. However, it is important to provide information about the difficulty of this career and about how one can progress considering the path is often not that straight. Additionally, it is required to show that there are other professional careers for young scientists, so they can choose sooner rather than later whatever is better for their personal and professional development.
A background in sciences or a PhD does provide quite comprehensive knowledge and skills, which are transferables to other professional sectors and that provide a competitive advantage for any type of job, within or outside the academic world.
In the United Kingdom, it is common practice that universities and research centres have these professional advice services for the young scientist: workshops, mock interviews, advice for CV writing… Having this in mind, as well as the origin of SRUK and the experience of their membership, SRUK organises this day to provide a similar guidance to all Spanish young scientists, with special attention to the opportunities present in the United KIngdom both within and outside the research field (either in academia or in the private sector).
