Synopsis
To add to the words of Professor Mayor Zaragoza, I welcome you to this workshop on behalf of the Ramón Areces Foundation. The Foundation’s Scientific Council, represented here by Professors Mayor Zaragoza, Villanueva Rodriguez, and myself, has taken a keen interest in organising this workshop. This event is part of a long and fruitful collaboration between the Nature group and our institution, through which we have organised meetings that were not only very interesting at the time they were held but have also had an extraordinary impact. For instance, in 2009 the topic of “personal genomes” was discussed. At that time, this issue was considered highly challenging, and it was thought that many of those attending that event would not live to see personal genomes applied in everyday practice. However, today, only six years later, massive sequencing allows personal genomes to be deciphered. Therefore, what previously seemed utopian is already a clear reality.
