Synopsis
The field of diabetes is a very broad one, since different organs perform different functions in metabolic control. Not only do the pancreas and adipose tissue regulate metabolism, so too do the muscle, brain and liver perform crucial functions in this disease, hence a holistic vision of the metabolic syndrome is necessary.
Currently, 25% of the population above the age of 20 years has metabolic syndrome, although the mean age profile of these patients has diminished drastically in recent years. Will this trend be maintained in the future? Are current treatments effective? Are new therapeutic targets being investigated?
