Beyond biogas as renewable energy source: conversion to methanol through metallic nanoparticles embedded in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)

The main objective of the META2NOL project is the catalytic conversion of the main gases from biogas, methane and carbon dioxide, into a biofuel such as methanol. The main interest is that, from the biogas obtained through the anaerobic digestion of organic waste, a previous step for the treatment of this waste, a biofuel such as methanol can be obtained. In this way, organic waste is eliminated and the greenhouse gases contained in biogas are reduced as well.

At this stage, the CO2 to methanol conversion reaction is at an advanced stage of study, having established various collaborations with materials research centers for the generation of new catalysts. In particular, the study of a novel material such as 3D aerogel composed of Cu0ZnO@rGO and supercritically dried has arisen from the collaboration with the Materials Science Institute of Barcelona, ​​as a result of this two communications have been sent to international congresses and an article has been submitted for review. An international collaboration has also been established with the Electronic Institute of the University of Montpellier for the study of ZnO materials with oriented crystalline planes, for which a patent proposal has already been submitted and an article is in an advanced stage of development. In addition, the development of the project has allowed the completion of a final master's thesis completed and another ongoing, with the aim of carrying out a rigorous study on copper, zinc and cobalt as catalyst materials. This work has generated an article already sent for review and a communication to an international congress. The first tests for the conversion of methane to methanol are under study in order to integrate both reactions for the global conversion of biogas.
