Abstract

We know that there is a genetic component in the response to any pharmacological treatment and that it affects the absorption, transport, and metabolism, as well as the specific activity of the treatment. We know that the result of a pharmacological treatment in a specific patient will be affected by positive and negative factors of a genetic nature in interaction with the environment. The analysis of these genetic factors, or pharmacogenetic analysis, can prevent some of the -related problems, such as diminished effectiveness or adverse side effects. Nonetheless, there is still very little experience in the application of pharmacogenetics in clinical practice and, therefore, despite the fact that there are medicines for which a pharmacogenetic test is available that could benefit patients, aiding in the selection of the drug or adjustment of dosage, they are very rarely applied. The purpose of this project is to provide a pharmacogenetic overview of the treatment of colon cancer, while at the same time analysing a large number of genetic markers and developing a decision algorithm that enables personalised, verifiable pharmacological predictions. All of this should make it possible to draw up a pharmacological action guide to establish therapeutic guidelines and recommendations applicable to patients with colon cancer.
