Abstract
mRNA transport and local translation in neuron dendrites is a key process for correct formation of synapses (the functional unit of the nervous system), in addition to the synaptic plasticity processes that constitute the basis for memorising and learning in adults. The base hypothesis for this project is that the local translation process in the dendrites could be affected in the case of Down's Syndrome, which would at least partially explain the mental retardation inherent to this pathology. The project has two main objectives:
- to analyse dendritogenesis; that is, how the dendrite formation and maturity process occurs, in mouse models with Down's Syndrome; and
- to establish whether the mTOR pathway, one of the main local translation regulating pathways, the implication of which in the dendritogenesis process is well documented, is affected in these mice.
