Abstract

The objectives achieved so far are: Cell lines derived from mice have been obtained, one derived from a normal mouse, CNh, and the other derived from a mouse with trisomy, CTb. These lines behave differently in the presence of oleic acid. When the CNh line is incubated in the presence of oleic acid, it produces a cell clustering characteristic of cell differentiation. In addition, we have analysed the expression of the enzyme involved in the formation of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter, choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). Oleic acid increases the expression of this enzyme in CNh cells. However, neither of these effects, cell clustering nor increased ChAT expression, is reproducible in the CTb line. These results strengthen the effect of oleic acid during brain development and help to further research on the mechanisms involved in brain development in Down syndrome.
