Abstract

The administration of targeted therapies is one of the current challenges of modern medicine that would improve the survival and quality of life of many patients. There are several methods to achieve this, including local drug delivery. In this context, although the efficiency of targeted drugs for lung diseases would improve with pulmonary administration, the reality is that the number of drugs approved for this type of administration is very small. This is due to the difficulty of designing suitable excipients for their appropriate pulmonary distribution.

The NanoSurf project will produce new nanomaterials based on pulmonary surfactant to improve this distribution and thus increase the efficiency of drugs to treat pulmonary diseases. These nanomaterials will be manufactured using microfluidic systems and user-friendly methods for clinical implementation. Interest in this material stems from previous studies demonstrating its rapid movement at the air-liquid interface and its ability to release drugs intracellularly.

We will study the improvement in pulmonary biodistribution of the new materials and test their efficiency in improving treatments using idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis as an example. A fatal disease whose risk factors are associated with aging and smoking among others.
