Abstract
This study undertakes to analyse the role of several proteins in atherothrombosis, such as TWEAK (Tumor Necrosis Factor-Like Weak Inducer of Apoptosis), the SOCS (Suppressor of Cytokine Signalling) family and HSP (Heat Shock Proteins). The interest of this project resides in the fact that atherothrombosis leads to serious medical conditions such as strokes, angina pectoris or heart attacks. Despite breakthroughs in the study of this disease, it continues to be the main cause of death in our country and the Western world. For this reason, its complex biological mechanisms must be identified in order to design new drugs to block its progression.
Additionally, this study aims to identify whether an alteration in the blood level of any of these proteins indicates which people run the risk of suffering a stroke or heart attack. This would be important in terms of concentrating therapeutic efforts on those people in order to prevent the development of episodes which, once produced, are well known to cause death before the individual can receive adequate medical attention.
