Nowadays, when life expectancy has increased worldwide, diseases that affect cognitive function, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), are increasingly prevalent. Neurodegenerative diseases are a very diverse group of disorders characterized by a progressive failure of the nervous system. In recent years, there has been considerable progress in understanding their molecular and cellular bases. Although the discovery of new targets and biomarkers that allow early diagnosis have opened new lines of research, these diseases continue to be a great challenge for researchers and clinicians.
These challenges include the study of these diseases at the preclinical level, the importance of a patient-centered approach in research, and barriers to the transference of new advances from basic research into the clinic. Society needs to understand these key issues in order to garner its support for research that will translate into future therapies for patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
