Abstract

Access to digital information is a fundamental right, yet significant barriers persist for vulnerable groups such as older adults with neurodegeneration, migrants with limited proficiency in Spanish, and individuals with low functional literacy. In this context, the project titled “Linguistic Accessibility on the Web: Psycholinguistic Research for the Implementation of Easy-to-Read” proposes innovative solutions to ensure that web content is comprehensible for everyone. This project aims to implement Easy-to-Read (ETR) in digital environments through an interdisciplinary approach that combines digital humanities with psycholinguistics. Easy-to-Read, which simplifies texts without compromising information accuracy, is an inclusive strategy that, while extensively explored in printed materials, remains under-researched in digital contexts. The project is structured around two key pillars. On one hand, it will conduct experimental studies with various target groups, employing technologies such as eye-tracking systems to analyze how ETR adaptations affect reading comprehension and reduce cognitive load. This approach will accurately measure variables such as fixation time and reading patterns before and after the intervention, generating robust empirical data. On the other hand, the project will develop a digital self-assessment tool enabling companies and institutions to evaluate and enhance the cognitive accessibility of their websites based on ETR criteria, encouraging its adoption as an inclusive standard. The project’s impact spans multiple levels. Scientifically, it will advance research in psycholinguistics and digital accessibility. Socially, it will improve the quality of life for groups with specific needs, facilitating their access to essential services such as healthcare and education. Additionally, the development of a practical tool will provide institutions and businesses with an innovative resource to comply with accessibility regulations and promote digital equity. With a methodology rooted in empirical evidence and a clear inclusive mission, this project positions itself as a benchmark in improving web accessibility, transforming the way people access and understand information in digital environments.
