The present thesis project aims to provide a prospective-deductive perspective on the elements and possible avenues of relations between the European Union and the Russian Federation in the future, based on the resolution of the current conflict in Ukraine. To this end, it begins with an analytical-descriptive analysis of the two elements under study: the geopolitical factor and the cultural factor.
The geopolitical factor focuses on analyzing the space where future international relations are to be developed, examining the interests of each actor (or group of actors), as well as the opportunities and projections of power and influence in various regions extending from Western Europe to the Pacific Ocean. This section will be developed through an analysis of the main geopolitical currents addressing our actors, providing a detailed description of each approach and its repercussions on current political thought.
To analyze the cultural factor, the study will delve into the phenomenon of the “Russian Singularity”: the unique perspective of Russian civilizational culture from the first European engagement in the early 18th century to the formation of ideas and currents establishing the concept of singularity. As a reference, the study will consider the intellectual movements that emerged in the 19th century, their development, and evolution. A descriptive and analytical analysis will be conducted, tracing the trajectory from early Slavophile and Pan-Slavist currents to the nationalist developments that arose in the late 20th century, including the revival of “Eurasianist” positions and their influence on the prevailing political doctrine.
Finally, a prospective-deductive section will address, based on the studies carried out in the previous stages, the different means and pathways for establishing relations between the EU and Russia. This will involve a methodical and logical study, taking counterarguments to the similarities between the EU and Russia to offer counterpoints that bring together the cultural and geopolitical elements from a political realism perspective.
