The development, now more than 10 years ago, of genetic strategies that allow 'reprogramming' of adult cells to pluripotent stem cells brought to the biomedicine arena new means to study and treat diseases. This technology allows for the development of cellular models of disease by using human cells derived directly from patients, which allows the advancement of both basic disease knowledge and the development of specific therapies.
Reprogrammed cells also have the potential to be used as cell therapy and they are being investigated for diseases such as Parkinson's or immune diseases. In recent years, stem cell culture techniques (embryonic, adult or reprogrammed) have been refined to allow for the development of structures that resemble organs in vitro. Nowadays, 'organoids' similar to the human intestine, heart, eye, or brain have been developed and are currently allowing the study of both the basic processes involved in the development of these organs and the dysfunctions associated with developmental diseases.
