Digital technologies have contributed to significantly mitigate the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on economic activity, the provision of public services, education, scientific research, and life at home. Advancing digitization will undoubtedly be an engine of recovery, however, doubts still arise about what effective digitization really consists of, and which technologies and projects will have a greater impact on that recovery.
In this conference, the existing initiatives for a decentralized management of online platforms were analyzed. Understood as natural monopolies, the advantages and challenges offered by the Blockchain were analyzed to address problems such as the cost of maintaining infrastructure, governance or the distribution of benefits generated by the collaborative economy. Professor Hassan and his team are researching how to make online platforms work in a more democratic, open, and fair way, helped by Blockchain technology.

Whether digital currencies are crypto based, launched by massive social media platforms like Facebook, or backed by the central bank as in some countries including China and Singapore, a significant revolution is taking place in the way digital innovation is expected to shape the future of money. This seminar examined academic research on blockchain technologies and digital currencies and considered their potential impact on our future digital lives.
