15th National Research Competition in Life and Earth Sciences
Biotechnology for functional food
Research Centre or Institution : Facultad de Farmacia. Universidad de Granada
The project aims to establish a solid foundation for the application of functional foods to various intestinal diseases. The project focuses on two intestinal diseases: inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as intestinal maturation in newborns. Specifically: (1) The intestinal anti-inflammatory activity of the routine glycomacropeptide and 3 non-absorbable glucides will be assessed in the lymphocyte transfer model in mice. This is important because the models used to date are not strictly chronic and require validation in a lymphocyte-mediated model rather than an innate immunity model. (2) The potential therapeutic effect of these compounds will be studied in an irritable bowel syndrome model. Although its pathology is complex and poorly understood, it is believed that there is a certain underlying inflammatory component, validating the working hypothesis that there may be a therapeutic effect. (3) The study will complement the effects on intestinal maturation of those compounds for which data are still lacking in this regard. In all cases functional and biochemical analysis will be performed as well as a genomic study using post-genomic microarray and validation by quantitative PCR.
