Introduction

Democracy and communications in the digital era is now subject to a crisis of confidence: mainstream media is not trusted, 'fake news' fills the networks, populist politicians ride a tide of social media-fuelled anger, while establishment leaders try to spin their way through the major challenges of economic disruption, social fragmentation and migration. Corporations, governments, marketing and advertising are all caught up in this information crisis. But what is the role of technology and media in practice and what are the threats and opportunities it presents to media practitioners and the political process? How should journalists, policy-makers and other media practitioners respond? The second Masterclass for Fundación Ramón Areces of the year will provide latest insights, a contextual overview and case studies. It will also be a highly interactive opportunity to address your particular professional interest with other experts and practitioners.
